Hulu’s original content play has become more animated, as it announced a new, 13-week series starring Eva Longora—she of “Desperate Housewives†fame—as a record exec who moves to suburbia to give motherhood a try. The flip? It’s a cartoon, and Longora will provide the voice for Rudi Wilson in “Mother Up!â€
The show debuts this fall on the video aggregator, and on City Television in Canada; it was previewed at AdAge’s Digital Conference in New York.
While it’s not unusual for Hulu to be creating original content, OC quickly is becoming a mainstay on services like Netflix and Amazon as they attempt to evolve their businesses. What is unique is that Hulu will offer up the show to Netflix and iTunes.
Acting Hulu CEO Andy Forssell said he sees that as part of the company’s evolution as well: “I don’t think of it as any differently than launching on Fox on a Friday night. We think once it has aired on Hulu, it could have a home on any number of cable networks, and obviously we will be selling it into video-on-demand systems like iTunes and Netflix.”
Hulu partnered with Canadian cableco Rogers Media to pony up cash for the show’s development and production.
Longora, meanwhile, also is one of the executive producers; she’s joined by a couple of Hollywood vets, Yair Landau, who formerly was head of Sony Pictures and who founded Mass Animation. Michael Shipley co-produced “Family Guy” and “American Dad,” both shows have made it into Hulu’s Top 10 at times.
Longora explained her involvement in the show as being part of the evolution of television: “TV in general is an elevator that’s gone down,” she said. “It’s not affecting just one network; those [big] numbers just don’t exist.”
Forssell, SVP of Content at Hulu before following Jason Kilar into the CEO spot, is behind another animated series premiering on Hulu this summer, “The Awesomes.†Hulu’s new content also will include BBC Worldwide Americas, “The Wrong Mans,†a comedic thriller, the docu-series “Behind the Mask,†which explores the world of sports mascots, the French crime thriller “Braquo,†the second seasons of hit Israeli series “Prisoners of War,†britcoms “Pramface†and “Fresh Meat,†and the fourth season of cult reality drama “The Only Way is Essex†(“TOWIEâ€).
How, you wonder, do Hulu owners NBCUniversal, New Corp. and Disney feel about having another pseudo-cable channel rolling out original content? It’s all about the bottom line. If a rising tide floats all boats, they’re more than ready to go along for the ride.
